Hormones: What is Progesterone?

In my practice I find that most women are Estrogen Dominant, that is to say that the ratio between Estrogen and Progesterone is favoring Estrogen, there by contributing to symptoms like PMS, breast tenderness, cystic breast, fibroid uterus, and endometriosis just to name a few.

The goal is to identify the underlying causes for the imbalance, and correct them using a holistic approach and supplementation, when indicated.

Natural progesterone is a vital hormone in the female body.

DHEA Replacement Improves Well-Being In Women With Adrenal Insufficiency

DHEA Replacement Improves Well-Being In Women With Adrenal Insufficiency

The human adrenal cortex secretes not only the essential hormones cortisol and aldosterone, but also DHEA and large amounts of DHEAS (DHEA Sulfate). The serum concentration of DHEAS is 20 times that of serum cortisol, and the concentration of DHEA is 1/20 that of cortisol. The very high concentration of DHEAS reflects its high rate of secretion and low rate of metabolic clearance. DHEA and its sulfate are interconvertible. The sulfate is mainly formed from DHEA in the adrenal gland and in the liver, and many organs that are targets of androgens and estrogens convert DHEAS back to DHEA, which can then be transformed by the same organs into active androgens and estrogens.

Menopause, as Brought to You by Big Pharma

MILLIONS of American women in the 1990s were told they could help their bodies ward off major illness by taking menopausal hormone drugs. Some medical associations said so. Many gynecologists and physicians said so. Respected medical journals said so, too.

A 1950s ad for Premarin, far left; a popular 1966 book that referred to menopause as though it were a disease that could be cured with hormones; and in 2000, Lauren Hutton in an ad about menopause, from the maker of Premarin.

Connie Barton started taking Wyeth's Prempro in 1997. She learned she had breast cancer in 2002, and later sued.

Along the way, television commercials positioned hormone drugs as treatments for more than hot flashes and night sweats — just two of the better-known symptoms of menopause, which is technically defined as commencing one year after a woman’s last menstrual cycle.

Symptoms of Estrogen Dominance

EXCERPTED FROM WHAT YOUR DOCTOR MAY NOT TELL YOU ABOUT MENOPAUSE
by John R. Lee, M.D. and Virginia Hopkins

Estrogen dominance is a term coined by Dr. John Lee in his first book on natural progesterone. It describes a condition where a woman can have deficient, normal or excessive estrogen, but has little or no progesterone to balance its effects in the body. Even a woman with low estrogen levels can have estrogen dominance symptoms if she doesn’t have any progesterone.

Sexuality and Aging
Menopausal and postmenopausal women can experience decreases in both libido, orgasm, and frequency of coitusmost commonly because of physiologic changes due to menopause, less commonly due to depression or marital discord. The differential diagnosis in women who are seen for sexual difficulties during the climacteric is challenging, especially when symptoms such as decline in libido and/or persistent dyspareunia occur simultaneously with depression and marital discord. Estrogen, with or without androgen, can ameliorate the physiologic changes of menopause affecting sexuality. Depression can be treated with Bio-Feedback. Marital discord is best treated with couples therapy. The marital difficulties can either be the cause or the consequence of changes in sexual activity. In the latter case the marital discord resolves with the return of regular coital activity.

Losing Fat, The Right Way

Weight gain as you age

Somewhere around age 40, you look in the mirror and — yikes! When did you grow that paunchy middle? Maybe your weight is up a little, maybe it's up a lot. But usually extra pounds attach themselves to your hips and thighs, not your waist. What's going on?

Welcome to midlife expansion. Experts disagree on how much blame to place on aging and how much on menopause and andropause, but one thing's clear: Between ages 35 and 55, your body changes. Either you gain weight or maintaining your weight becomes more difficult. And yes, your middle tends to expand.

Mammography, what you need to know before submitting to one

By Sherrill Sellman

Every October since 1985, the recognizable symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, pink ribbons, are displayed on TV, poster and magazine advertisements as well as proudly adorn women's lapels. The multitudes of runs, hikes, walks and other fundraising events raise hundred of millions of dollars to conquer that dreaded scourge of the modern woman, breast cancer. High-profile companies like Avon, Lee Denim and Revlon have joined ranks along with the Susan G. Komen Foundation's "Race for the Cure" and the L.A. City of Hope Hospital's "Walk for Hope." Popular celebrities lead the charge.

Each year 180,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 44,000 will die of the disease. The U.S. has one of the highest breast cancer rates in the world. Fifty years ago the incidence for a woman's life-time risk was one in 20. Now it has skyrocketed to one in eight. Clearly the so-called war on cancer has not even made a dent in to the breast cancer epidemic as the rates continue to climb at the rate of 1 percent a year.

Mammograms Don't Save Lives

Mammograms Don't Save Lives

Adding an annual mammogram to a careful physical examination of the breasts does not improve breast cancer survival rates over getting the examination alone, new research reports. This finding is particularly important since annual mammograms, beginning as early as age 40, is an almost universal practice.
